Description

The Triangulum galaxy (M33) is the third largest member of the local group of galaxies, which includes our own Milky Way and the Andromeda. Located 2.73 million light years away, it is believed that it is a satellite of the Andromeda galaxy. Discovered in 1654 by Giovanni Batista Hodierna, it was first thought to be an area of nebuosity. In 1764, it was independently discovered by Charles Messier, who included it as the 33rd object in his catalog of things that are not comets. There are several large HII star producing areas within this galaxy as well as over 54 globular clusters.
